Manchester Mesivta School

Manchester Mesivta School is a Jewish secondary school for boys located in Prestwich in the English county of Greater Manchester.
It is a voluntary aided school administered by Bury Metropolitan Borough Council, but admits Orthodox Jewish boys aged 11 to 16 from all over Greater Manchester. Previously an independent school, Manchester Mesivta School became voluntary-aided in 2004 and relocated to new buildings in 2005.
Manchester Mesivta School operates principally as a mesivta for pupils who wish to proceed eventually to a Yeshiva, and therefore aims for pupils to achieve a high degree of proficiency in Torah studies. The school offers a Yeshiva-orientated Torah syllabus along with the National Curriculum. Secular studies lead to GCSE courses and examinations. In addition there is also an independent sixth form provision attached to the school site.
|There are 134 pupils. As it is nearly חנוכה, doughnuts are being sold for charity. Most boys do 10/11 GCSEs and if they stay for A-levels, they will probably do 3/4. The head-master is Rabbi Sulzbacher. The morning is dedicated to Hebrew studies, while the afternoon is for secular. For years 7 and 8, the day finishes at 5:55, but for the older years, at 6:55. In GCSE, there is a choice of French or עברית, and a choice of geography or history. There is no option for art, therefore, some boys do it privately out of school. Furthermore, the PE GCSE is only for the B-set. DT is also not done as a GCSE. English lit., English lang., Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, French and Geography are done with AQA. ICT is done with WJEC (a Welsh board). Biblical Hebrew and Religious studies are with OCR. The school has a gym, which is run by Mr Marks, the PE teacher. There is also a canteen, catered by R' Rutenberg. There is a בית המדרש, where a school מנין is held every morning. Some classes daven מנחה there, while others daven in the classroom where they learn גמרא. On חנוכה, on the first night, the מנורה is lit, and the school davens מעריב there. The school uses a homework diary system, which according to Mr McPherson, (English teacher) is inferior to the old homework line system. Parents must sign homework diaries weekly on Thursday night. מ.מ.ל כתב את זה.|
